And you think the economy in Michigan sucks...

So a couple weeks ago I went to the local landfill on business because I noticed something that made me think they were ripping me off (which they were) and I was amazed at all the people digging through the landfill. My colleague took this pic:

This is the active cell of the landfill. In the middle of the pic is a truck pulling up to dump its load. There had to be 50-100 people fighting each other to be the first to scavenge through what was being dumped. With unemployment so high amongst the "previously disadvantaged people" (the PC term they use here on the rare occassion they try and be PC), this is the way some people scratch out a living. Sad :(
At the hazardous waste landfill I noticed they had barbed wire around the fence. I asked about it and they said they are less worried about stealing than people hurting themselves by breaking in to dig through the chemical soup. Yikes.
On a slightly amusing note, when I got to the landfill to talk to the manager (during working hours), I was told he was in the shower. I stood outside the door for a good 30 minutes waiting for the clown to finish his midday shower. At least he was kind enough to sing for my entertainment.
I told my coworkers about the incident and I got the usual response...."Welcome to Africa!" :)
